Pea is an annual, climbing variety. Fruits are pods, which contain succulent peas. Immature peas are used as vegetables, mature seeds as legumes. The pods of the normal green pea have a parchment layer, which makes them inedible. Sugarsnap pea pods do not have this parchment layer, which means the pod can be eaten whole.
